(1893 - 1952)

Paramahansa Yogananda, a beloved world teacher, brought the ancient wisdom of India to the West. In 1920 he was invited to serve as India's delegate for the international congress of religious leaders that was meeting in Boston. He remained in America traveling and lecturing across the country to thousands of entusiastic seekers in the largest auditoriums in the country - from New York's Carnegie Hall to Los Angeles's Philharmonic.  These auditoriums were filled to capacity and thousands were turned away. Many prominent figures in the arts, sciences, and business became his followers. He founded Self-Realization Fellowship (Yogoda Satsanga Society in India) which has it's international headquarters in Los Angeles, California, and many other temples, ashrams, and centers throughout the world. In 1946 his spiritual classic and bestselling Autobiography of a Yogi was published and has been translated in to 18 languages.

Yogananda taught the unity of all great religions in his Self-Realization Fellowship Lesson's on India's ancient science and philosophy of Yoga and Meditation methods for attaining direct personal experience of God. He introduced and spread the teaching of Kriya Yoga, a scared spiritual science originating milliniums ago in India. Kriya is a soul-awakening technique that had been lost in the Dark Ages and revived by a linage of enlightened masters.

On March 7, 1952 Paramahansa Yogananda passed away entering the super conscious state of Mahasamadi, a God illumined Master's conscious exit from the body. The effects of this phenomenon were documented by Forest Lawn Memorial Park in their testimony that "No physical disintegration was visable in his body even 20 days after death. Yogananda's body was apparently in a phenominal state of immutability".

Paramahansa Yogananda's spiritual legacy continues to grow with meditation groups, centers, retreats, and temples affiliated with his Self-Realization Fellowship spreading worldwide.

Self-Realization Fellowship M o n a s t i c  O r d e r
Self-Realization Fellowship consists of a dedicated monastic order that was founded by Paramahansa Yogananda. Monks and nuns of the Order serve the society’s worldwide spiritual and humanitarian work by publishing the writings and recordings of Paramahansaji and his direct disciples. The monks and nuns provide spiritual counsel, and conduct temple services, retreats, lecture tours, and maintain the buildings and meditation gardens. They also oversee the distribution of the SRF Lessons and books. They reside in the USA, Europe and India, devoting their lives to seeking God and serving humanity through the work of Self-Realization Fellowship.

In all the great religions there have been those who have chosen to forego family life and worldly responsibilities in order to give themselves singleheartedly to a divine quest. Following this tradition, monks and nuns of the Self-Realization Fellowship Order embrace a four-fold vow of renunciation: simplicity, celibacy, obedience, and loyalty. In the religious orders of both East and West, such vows are the very foundation of the monastic life.
